Why Is My Air Conditioner Blowing Hot Air?

AC Repair

Here at Metro Express Service, we offer AC service in Carrollton. Since the purpose of an air conditioner is to, in fact, cool the air coming into your indoor space, hot air coming out of your AC unit is definitely a problem. Is this the case for your AC?

Texas Is HOT

If you live in the Metroplex, it’s safe to say you know it gets hot here. Every summer, it gets well above 100 degrees. But our temperatures start creeping above 70 degrees starting in April, so we know most of you use your air conditioner regularly at least seven months out of the year.

We want to make sure that your AC is working in top condition, so let’s figure out why it’s blowing hot air and how to fix it as soon as possible.

Smaller Problems

While there are a few reasons why your air conditioner might be blowing hot air, we’re going to start with an easier one to fix. Have you checked your fan settings on your thermostat? To properly cool down the inside of your space, the best fan setting is “Auto,” not just “On.” Air-conditioner systems cool your home or office in cycles, so if your setting is “On,” it’s on all the time, even when the air is not being cooled (because the cycle is not 24/7). If your setting is set to “Auto,” the fan will automatically kick in when your AC has cool air to blow into your home, so the air should always be cool.

OK, so if you’ve checked your settings, and it’s on “Auto,” but you’re still noticing hot air. What else can be going on?

How about a dirty filter?

If you’re sitting here, asking, “What filter?” skip to the bottom and just give us a call. If you’re handy or have a handy friend or family member, this is another super simple fix. The AC system in your home or office is designed to keep dust and debris out of your lungs as it passes through an air filter. However, when this filter becomes too dirty and clogged, it starts blocking the air from reaching your unit and thus stops cooling your air efficiently.

You should be checking your air filter regularly and changing it if it’s dirty. A good idea is to just replace your filter on a recurring basis every 90 days or so. If you have allergies or air sensitivities, you might want to replace it more often than that. If you’re going to replace your filter on your own, make sure to pay attention to the size and type (or we can do it).

Medium Problems

Just like your air-conditioner filter should be checked on a regular basis, so should your actual AC unit. Your AC unit is outside, so naturally, things like leaves, sticks, and dirt can pile up around, on, and in your unit. If inside things can clog up your filter and keep your unit from cooling your space properly, you better believe outside things can too. You can clean the outside of your unit using a simple house garden hose on a low setting. Sweep away all the stuff around it, give it a good washing, and that might help. Now, using a garden hose will really just clean the immediate outside, so what we ultimately recommend is regular AC maintenance.

You can have a professional like us scheduled to check your unit throughout the year to keep things like this from happening.

Larger Problems

The science behind your air conditioner is that it actually cools your space by removing heat from the air inside and dumping it outside. There is a cool liquid component to this science called refrigerant, and refrigerant actually absorbs the heat from the air. This refrigerant liquid can sometimes run low, and when this happens, your AC is not able to transfer as much heat out of your space. The air coming out of your AC is warmer as a result. Refrigerant liquid running low can mean a frozen line or even a leak, and this problem needs to be dealt with by a certified professional.
